Decisive measures are needed to raise Europe’s competitiveness in order to support higher levels of productivity, employment and prosperity. The effects of the crisis have exacerbated structural weaknesses and contributed to a legacy of economic and policy challenges that need to be tackled. These challenges have been made more pressing by the unprecedented rise in migration witnessed over the past year, and which – in all likelihood – will continue in the near future. The way to tackle these challenges is through deeper European market integration, further cohesion and convergence, strengthening and developing markets and stepping up efforts to make Europe stronger and more competitive. Openness, innovation, skills development and the free movement of goods and services, labour, and capital are the drivers of Europe’s competitiveness, growth and prosperity.
